The IM ABLE Foundation is holding the 2nd Annual “Are You Able?” Challenge Night. Click here to register for this event.
The purpose of the event is to demonstrate our vision and goals and expose the community to the work we want to pursue. The night’s festivities will be a sports theme but from a disabled person’s perspective. Professional as well as local athletes will be on hand to challenge you on the putting greens, basketball hoops and other sporting events that will have to be performed from a wheelchair. The culmination of the night will be a wheelchair obstacle course challenge that will take able bodied individuals and putting them through a timed course representing some of the daily challenges a disabled person faces. These would include inclines, declines, rough terrain over rocks, curbs and a door to name a few. The team or individual with the best time will be crowned the winner.
While the main goal for the foundation is to encourage and promote physical fitness to children with a disability, it is also equally as important to bring awareness to the able bodied community so that they can have a better understanding and respect for what their disabled counterparts must face on a daily basis.
Proceeds from this event and events to follow will allow the foundation to support demonstrations with handcycles and other fitness equipment for the disabled and help the child and their families see what is available to them. Monies have already been spent by the foundation to buy three bikes that will accommodate 5-18 yrs old so that all who come out will have the opportunity to try a bike. Grant requests and awarded contributions will be used to maintain these bikes and to award children, whose families do not have the monetary resources, the means to purchase a bike.
